Walnut
Compo Mat has pioneered walnut shell abrasive blasting starting with the US Navy in the 1950's. The Navy's aircraft carriers and submarines were stripped only of their top coats, which left behind the expensive undercoats undisturbed. Before the introduction of walnut shell blasting, the coatings were removed all the way down to the bare metal which would require the replacement of the undercoat, the vinyl coat, and the top coat. The idea of selective coating material with walnut shells originated with Compo Mat and has saved the Navy both time and money. When ShellPro partnered with Compo Mat, they took on the acquisition of Agrashell in 2002, and they became the largest manufacturer of walnut shell products and they also became the largest supplier of walnut shells in the world.
