Plastic Media Blasting

The most practical means of paint removal and original bare surface exposure is plastic media blasting known as PMB. This process is rapid, economical, and environmentally safe for the removal of coatings and paint from almost any surface without introducing toxic acid dipping, chemical strippers, sandblasting, or hand and mechanical abrasive methods. plastic media blasting is similar in nature to sandblasting, but instead of using hard, abrasive silica sand, a much softer reusable matter with plastic particles is used at a much lower pressure which is set somewhere between 14-40 psi compared to 60-100 psi for sand blasting.

The more forceful pressure can cause material surface damage, heat warping, pitting, and stretching. At the lower air pressures of plastic media blasting, the plastic media is able to remove the coatings or paint without causing damage to the underlying surface, even with materials such as aluminum, fiberglass, and other plastics. There are five major types of media used and they are polyester, urea, melamine, acrylic, and clear-cut. When you are working with a delicate machine such as a timeless vehicle or a naval aircraft carrier, it is always best to remove the decades of paint, oxidation, and surface rust in the most delicate way possible, and the best way to do this is with plastic media blasting.

Getting down to the original surface will allow for the process to go a lot smoother in more ways than one, plus, it may tell you a few things about your machine that you may have never suspected like well-hidden cancer rust or excess body filler. Surface preparation is the most important step to achieving a superior high-quality paint job. Among the more than 200 products manufactured and distributed by Compo Mat worldwide, the plasti-grit is their flagship media used for plastic media blasting. This product is custom engineered, dry stripping abrasive for fast, safe, low-cost surface cleaning and coatings removal. This product government approved and meets the requirements of MIL-P-85891, their family of dry stripping abrasives is non-toxic, operator-safe, and inflicts no damage on finished surfaces. Unlike more traditional cleaning media, plasti-grit is a non-polluting, long-lasting and recyclable plastic that completely eliminates the need for sandblasting or dangerous chemicals. This plasti-grit was developed more than a generation ago, and is also acclaimed for its positive impact on the problems of air pollution, toxic waste and worker safety.
